Comedian Red Buttons Dies in L.A. at 87.By BOB THOMAS
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Red Buttons, the carrot-topped burlesque comedian who became a top star in early television and then in a dramatic role won the 1957 Oscar as supporting actor in "Sayonara," died Thursday. He was 87.
Buttons died of vascular disease at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles, publicist Warren Cowan said. He had been ill for some time, and was with family members when he died, Cowan said.
With his eager manner and rapid-fire wit, Buttons excelled in every phase of show business, from the Borscht Belt of the 1930s to celebrity roasts in the 1990s.
His greatest achievement came with his "Sayonara" role as Sgt. Joe Kelly, the soldier in the post-World War II occupation forces in Japan whose romance with a Japanese woman (Myoshi Umeki, who also won an Academy Award) ends in tragedy. READ THE REST OF THE STORY

_________________________________________________________Iraq War Could Cost $500B Or More.......WASHINGTON -- The war in Iraq has cost almost $300 billion so far and would total almost a half-trillion dollars even if all U.S. troops were withdrawn by the end of 2009, according to a Congressional Budget Office analysis released Thursday.
Congress has approved $432 billion for military operations and other costs related to the war against terror since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The new CBO study is the first analysis by Congress' scorekeeping agency of how much of that has been allocated for the Iraq war.
Since 2003, the tally of appropriations for Iraq is $291 billion, CBO said. That includes $45 billion from a $94.5 billion hurricane relief and war funding measure passed last month.READ THE REST OF THE STORY

The world's largest retailer emitted the equivalent of 20.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide last year, the main greenhouse gas, while the best estimate for its supply chain all the production and shipping needed to fill Wal-Mart shelves is 10 times that, said Jim Stanway, director of project development in Wal-Mart's energy department.READ THE REST OF THE STORY

_________________________________________________________Teen killed in high-speed paintball battle.... JENKS, Okla. (AP) -- An SUV carrying high school football players having a paintball fight with teammates in another vehicle flew out of control on a highway and flipped, killing a 17-year-old boy, officials said.
The teens had just left a paintball adventure park Wednesday afternoon after meeting up other players and coaches from the Jenks High School football team, said Les Miller, manager of Paintball Adventure Games.
Seven of them were speeding down a highway in the two vehicles, shooting paintball pellets at each other, when the SUV crossed the median into oncoming traffic, struck a sign and then flipped several times, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.Garrett Austin Bennett, 17, died on the highway outside Tulsa. Two other teenagers were treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital.
"I have seen a lot of horseplay over the past years, but I think this is the first time I have ever seen somebody playing paintball at 75 mph," said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Pete Norwood. "The highway is no place to play."
Results of an investigation into the crash will be turned over to prosecutors, who will determine whether any criminal charges will be filed. (The Associated Press.)
