"Ansel Adams captures LA"*

The Montecito Heights Nerd found a site that has the LAPL's collection of Ansel Adams' photos of Los Angeles in 1940. (Yes, Adams did a series on LA.)

It's worth going to the site that the MH Nerd links to before going to the LAPL site because the poster of the pictures on his Flickr page gives an explanation of how they came to be, in true City Nerd fashion. I applaud this discovery by Gerard Van der Leun and the revelation of such by the Montecito Heights Nerd.

Update1: I have to also give credit to the Los Angeles Public Library and Carolyn Cole for the work in preserving the "Photos of LA." This resource is one of the best ways we can reach our past in this City, and without the work Carolyn and the library does on our behalf, we wouldn't have the understanding (as limited as it is) of where we came from and where we're going.

UPDATE2:
Thanks to a note from the tracker of all things news (LA Observed), I was pointed to another fairly recent post about these Ansel Adams pics from Ms. Kellogg at LAist.

My Favorite:

Notice how, in 1940, the City used reflectors along the crosswalk lines.

I guess nobody want to go to war until after the 4th of July

It looks like Iran has rejected a 5th of july deadline on it's nuclear ban .

Seems that the UN placed the deadline until after the 4th of July. Sounds to me like nobody wants to spoil our big birthday party.

Someone is being ignorant!!!!

Well , it seems to me that whoever complained about the sides of Skid row on the firetrucks being offensive, needs to speak with the community and the firefighters before they try changing their moniker.

If it is a morale issue for the fire department , then it shouldn't be changed.

Kudos to cherry wood for doing the petition drive. Too bad I hadn't heard of this sooner. Been inside sick as a dog. Bad lung infection. But I will be up and around today.

I prefer the name Central City East , but these Fire trucks were commissioned as Skid Row Fire Trucks and that is their blessing , so the name should not be removed from off of the trucks.

"If it's offending people, we don't want to be doing it," said Battalion Chief Lou Roupoli, adding that residents of the new condominiums and lofts popping up in the area have complained that the fire engine label is objectionable.

Some of the developers who have been converting old bank buildings into luxury lofts on the edges of skid row have increasingly been using the less-gritty name "Central City East" to describe the district.

Fire officials declined to say who complained. And with firefighters now campaigning to keep the skid row moniker, community leaders are largely trying to stay neutral in the debate.

.This is pretty offensive though. These guys walking around calling us a bunch of winos. Gotta say no wonder people are staying neutral . But hey!!!! Anyone who one day may pull my fat ass out of a burning building can pretty much have carte blanche to call their station whatever they want.

And I sure do hope these guys aren't winos on Duty .

I have seen them pretty upset on late night and early morning calls to my building though ,esp. if it is a fals alarm or someone who doesn't want to go to the hospital.

To the firefighters at Station 9, the skid row name is more than just a way of identifying the neighborhood they serve. They take pride working at what is considered the toughest assignment in the Los Angeles Fire Department, where the station can respond to more than 60 calls a day. Off-duty firefighters also wear T-shirts printed with the slogan "Wino Nino Firehouse Skid Row."

Lil' Hater: Nice Job Nancy Boys

Lil’ Hater has broken from his recent college speaking tour to speak out on Michael Cohen, the "man" suing the Angels for not being given a Mother’s Day promotional item. What the [expletive]?A Los Angeles man is suing the LA Angels for not giving him a gift bag last Mother’s Day? He should probably sue God for not giving him a set of balls, while he is at it. Important line of the story: “Women over 18 received the gifts.” So all men did not receive the gift. So A-Rod was able to walk out with a free bag from the game. That’s nice. This is what Arte Moreno gets for trying to pretend the Angels are an LA-based team. Now you get a-holes from LA coming to the game and filing frivolous lawsuits in OC, wasting our county’s time and money. That’s what the Anaheim City Council is for.If Moreno kept calling the team the Anaheim Angels, and marketing the team as such, the idiot psychiatrist would’ve gone to a Dodgers game instead. Then, when he bitched about not getting a free purse or whatever, he would have been stabbed to death by local Raiders fans attending the Dodger game. The Angels are really stupid, though. The team is now giving away the women’s bags to the first 25,000 patrons through the door, over 18. So now this guy will have some kids complaining that they are be discriminated against. Way to buckle under, Angels. Maybe they should take a page from the Washington Redskins who won’t even change their offensive mascot name, much less give some jerk a purse. It is hard to figure out who I hate more here, the Angels or this moron. That’s it for me. It’s back onto my college tour to keep hooking up with these ex-Real World cast members.

RED, A PENNY & AN ASS

Comedian Red Buttons Dies in L.A. at 87.

By BOB THOMAS

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Red Buttons, the carrot-topped burlesque comedian who became a top star in early television and then in a dramatic role won the 1957 Oscar as supporting actor in "Sayonara," died Thursday. He was 87.
Buttons died of vascular disease at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles, publicist Warren Cowan said. He had been ill for some time, and was with family members when he died, Cowan said.

With his eager manner and rapid-fire wit, Buttons excelled in every phase of show business, from the Borscht Belt of the 1930s to celebrity roasts in the 1990s.

His greatest achievement came with his "Sayonara" role as Sgt. Joe Kelly, the soldier in the post-World War II occupation forces in Japan whose romance with a Japanese woman (Myoshi Umeki, who also won an Academy Award) ends in tragedy. READ THE REST OF THE STORY

Iraq War Could Cost $500B Or More.......

WASHINGTON -- The war in Iraq has cost almost $300 billion so far and would total almost a half-trillion dollars even if all U.S. troops were withdrawn by the end of 2009, according to a Congressional Budget Office analysis released Thursday.

Congress has approved $432 billion for military operations and other costs related to the war against terror since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The new CBO study is the first analysis by Congress' scorekeeping agency of how much of that has been allocated for the Iraq war.

Since 2003, the tally of appropriations for Iraq is $291 billion, CBO said. That includes $45 billion from a $94.5 billion hurricane relief and war funding measure passed last month.READ THE REST OF THE STORY

Wal-Mart Discusses Global Warming Steps....

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is the biggest private user of electricity in the world and has huge potential to cut back on greenhouse gases in-house and among its 60,000 suppliers, company officials said ahead of a global warming information stop Wednesday by former vice president Al Gore.

Wal-Mart working groups on environmental change were meeting ahead of Gore's visit to discuss steps already taken and new efforts ahead under a green initiative launched last October by Chief Executive Lee Scott to make the often-criticized company a better environmental citizen.

The world's largest retailer emitted the equivalent of 20.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide last year, the main greenhouse gas, while the best estimate for its supply chain all the production and shipping needed to fill Wal-Mart shelves is 10 times that, said Jim Stanway, director of project development in Wal-Mart's energy department.READ THE REST OF THE STORY

Teen killed in high-speed paintball battle....

JENKS, Okla. (AP) -- An SUV carrying high school football players having a paintball fight with teammates in another vehicle flew out of control on a highway and flipped, killing a 17-year-old boy, officials said.

The teens had just left a paintball adventure park Wednesday afternoon after meeting up other players and coaches from the Jenks High School football team, said Les Miller, manager of Paintball Adventure Games.

Seven of them were speeding down a highway in the two vehicles, shooting paintball pellets at each other, when the SUV crossed the median into oncoming traffic, struck a sign and then flipped several times, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Garrett Austin Bennett, 17, died on the highway outside Tulsa. Two other teenagers were treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital.

"I have seen a lot of horseplay over the past years, but I think this is the first time I have ever seen somebody playing paintball at 75 mph," said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Pete Norwood. "The highway is no place to play."

Results of an investigation into the crash will be turned over to prosecutors, who will determine whether any criminal charges will be filed. (The Associated Press.)

Daily News wins out over LA Times

With the LA Times doing stories on how kids should not take algebra- low expectations.

Stories that only tell half the issue such as the the decision by the 9th circuit court and how the city council voted to bifurcate the vote and voted on appealing and the other vote , which Jan Perry voted for, to move forward with new language that might help bring about a tool to go after the crininals. And the LA Times failing to mention the vote was bifurcated ......

The LA Times has no credibility with me.

Just today, after the Daily news tells us about the continuing problems of Hope Gardens being placed in Sylmar yesterday, does the LA Times do a story on it.

And a NIMBY story at that; Quoting how manyy Women and Children are living in Skid Row.

Steve LOpez has already created a nimby attitude with his stories on skid row, that is what you hear from folks in neighborhoods that have permanent supportive housing going up , how they "don't want the people Steve Lopez wrote about" in his series on skid row moving into their neighborhoods. Saying that if they allow the people Steve Lopez wrote about in their Neighborhood it will turn into skid row.

Well , I read the stories in the Daily News and I see that they seem to be a bit more objective in telling the stories about these problems. The LA Times has created more problems with their stories.

I now have to question the sanity of DI Di Hersch giving Steve Lopez an award for fighting the stigma of Mental Illness, when all his stories have done, have created nothing but more stigma in the neighbrohoods that have proposed permanent supportive housing going up?

I am glad I took math classes and am able through deductive reasoning , with logic , be able to question things. Maybe this is why Steve Lopez has encouraged our youth not to take mathematics because if they don't then they will believe anything that they are told without even questioning their own logic.
So I will be purchasing a daily news off of the rack as often as I can and ignoring the LA Times.
